After the postponement of the season opener due to the coronavirus, the first Formula 1 race of the year will take place this weekend at the Red Bull Ring in Austria. The same event will feature another premiere: Pirelli’s new 18-inch racing tyres will also be used for the first time, but initially only in Formula 2. Their debut in Formula 1 will follow later.
Nexen names Edwin van der Stad vice president OE Europe
Dutchman Edwin van der Stad has been appointed as vice president OE Europe at Nexen Tire. Van der Stad brings 30 years of experience and premium level OE management with him to the Korean tyre manufacturer. Prior to joining Nexen, van der Stad spent many years with Bridgestone. Van der Stad’s new role took effect in March.
Rockwell Automation has announced the introduction of its VersaView 6300 family of Allen-Bradley Industrial Computers, which will be available starting August 2020. The launch of the VersaView 6300 family follows the May 2020 acquisition of ASEM S.p.A. and represents an extension of the company’s capability for industrial PCs (IPC), human machine interface (HMI) and secure Industrial IoT remote access solutions.
Shares in Hankook rally as Cho Hyun-bum becomes largest shareholder
Chairman Cho Yang-rai has sold his 23.59 per cent stake in Hankook Technology Group Co Ltd to his son Cho Hyun-bum. The sale makes the chief executive the largest shareholder of the parent company of South Korea’s largest tyre manufacturer, with around 42.9 per cent.
General Motors makes Hankook a 2019 Supplier of the Year Winner
Hankook Tire has been named a GM Supplier of the Year at a virtual ceremony honoring for General Motors’ 28th annual Supplier of the Year awards. GM recognised 116 of its best suppliers from 15 countries. It said these suppliers have “consistently exceeded GM's expectations, created outstanding value or introduced innovations to the company.” The ceremony, recognising supplier contributions in the calendar year, was delayed in March by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Geneva Motor Show to be sold to Palexpo, next event 2022
The Committee and Council of the Foundation "Salon International de l'Automobile" has today decided it will not organise a Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS) in 2021, it will not accept a loan from the State of Geneva and moving forward the sale of GIMS to Palexpo SA is the preferred solution. Organisers had previously said the 2021 show was "very uncertain".
Ligue de Football Professionel (LFP), the body which governs the French football leagues, officially presented the new identity of the 2020/21 Ligue 2 season this month. And, from 1 July 2020 it will be called Ligue 2 BKT. The title sponsorship agreement runs through to June 2024.

First Apollo tyre rolls off production line at Andhra Pradesh factory
Apollo Tyres has commissioned its seventh tyre factory globally and its fifth in India, with the first tyre rolling off the production line from the Andhra Pradesh greenfield facility in the southern part of the country on 25 June. Chairman, Onkar S Kanwar, vice chairman and MD, Neeraj Kanwar, supervisory board members along with the entire senior management team participated virtually in this momentous occasion.
Bridgestone buys iTrack Solutions from Transense Technologies
Bridgestone has bought iTrack, which provides tyre management solutions for the off-the-road (OTR) market, from UK-based Transense Technologies Plc. All employees of the iTrack Solutions business will join Bridgestone as part of the acquisition. No financial details have been released.
Erich Fric becomes Goodyear managing director consumer Europe Central
Following the news that The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has appointed ex-Brisa and Bridgestone executive Hakan Bayman as president of Goodyear’s consumer tyre business in Europe, it has emerged that former Goodyear Dunlop UK MD, Erich Fric has been appointed as Goodyear managing director Europe Central. Both appointments are effective 1 July 2020.

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has appointed ex-Brisa and Bridgestone executive Hakan Bayman as president of Goodyear’s consumer tyre business in Europe, effective 1 July 2020. Bayman will be based in Brussels and report directly to Chris Delaney, president Goodyear EMEA.
Brembo is to supply brake calipers and discs for the new Polestar 2. Specifically, Brembo is to produce the two-piece four-piston aluminium front calipers and Brembo’s exclusive dual-cast floating brake disc for the Polestar 2.
Europe’s light vehicle market faces long recovery climb: GlobalData
Following ACEA’s latest assessment that new car sales in the European Union will fall by 25 per cent in 2020, GlobalData’s automotive analyst David Leggett, says: “In May, the European passenger car market (EU+EFTA+UK) suffered another sharp drop, with new registrations falling by 57.2 per cent on last year.
